The Babylonians

Babylonian horsemen surge through a burning city while terrified families flee, bodies fall in the streets, and flames consume walls and homes. Armored riders, raised whips, and the smoke of destruction portray the violent conquest associated with Babylon’s invasion of Jerusalem, when the city was besieged, broken, and burned.

The scene reflects the biblical judgment described in the books of Kings and Jeremiah: Judah’s rebellion and idolatry ended in exile as Babylon became the instrument of God’s discipline. The fallen city, scattered civilians, and invading army give visual form to the sorrow of conquest and the cost of covenant unfaithfulness.
